The Road to Happiness is Often Paved in Gold

Although platinum has taken the reigns as the leading choice for bridal jewelry, there is always something to be said for tradition. And traditionally speaking, wedding bands have a long history with good old gold.

Gold has been highly sought after and valued since the beginning of recorded history. It’s been used for Academy Award statues, the Nobel Prize, and top honors at the Olympics and always as an implication and embodiment of ‘the best of the best.’ In fact, it is because of its long lasting value, and its resistance to time, that is used as a symbol of eternal vows.

Almost all cultures around the world craft engagement and wedding rings from gold, and although there has been a rise in the demand for a stronger metal like palladium, or one more fluid like platinum, there is a reason they call the cream of the crop ‘the gold standard.’

The use of yellow gold for engagement rings is a classic statement, one that creates a vintage inspired style, which pairs particularly well with a solitaire design. Verragio’s Classico 0246 engagement ring is the perfect pairing for yellow gold, featuring the exclusive Lumino setting, a Round cut center diamond sits atop an otherwise unadorned band. With only pave’ setting inside the prongs as decoration, yellow gold makes this ring pop.

And in the midst of the barrage of ornate 5 and 6 carat diamond engagement rings that have been publically paraded thought Hollywood in the last few years, there are still some celebrities who like to keep it simple too.

Despite her young age, Scarlett Johansson has always seemed like a little more reserved and settled than other stars her age. She rarely poses with her husband, Ryan Reynolds, on the red carpet, as they like to keep their private life out of the public light. So it seems appropriate that when the two decided to get married that they didn’t play the Hollywood bling game, instead Reynolds presented her with a 3 carat solitaire engagement ring, set onto a plain gold band. This is one low key couple for whom traditional, yellow gold seems to fit just right for.

However, it would be remise not to mention the way white gold allows the diamonds on a ring to stand out and shine without stealing the show, which is particularly important when showcasing a unique custom design.

Rock stars Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale might not look like the most traditional of couples, however in 2002, following a six year courtship, Rossdale proposed in with a custom ordered ring he helped to design himself in Amsterdam. The couple is still going strong with two kids, successful careers and the wide white gold band encrusted with diamonds still firmly placed on Stefani’s left hand.

Custom designing engagement rings is a trend that, much like Rossdale, many grooms are starting to embrace, and at a company like Verragio, where every ring ordered is custom made, the option is available for more than just celebrities now. So whether it is Round cut or Princess, white gold or yellow, Verragio still hold itself to ‘the gold standard.’
